THE FILA BRASILEIROS HEAD

It is the most important aspect of a Fila and is one of the best ways to determine quality and pureness. The head should be proportionate to the size of the animal and present a sad or melancolic look. The  Almond shaped eyes and the loose skin give it the appearance of being smart and always thinking yet relaxed and self assured.
The ratio of the muzzle and the head is determinant in the quality of the Fila, it must be a aprox. 1:1 ratio, measured from the tip of the nose to in between the eyes, and from here to the top of the occiput point.
The muzzle must be strong and not appear as if widening, it should be even from nose to just below the eyes.
The lips  make a paralel line with the top line of the muzzle starting almost straight down from the nose, rounding back towards the jaw line.
Why do we as breeders of the Fila Brasileiro always insist on procuring the best and purest bloodlines. Simply because their is no compromise in between the physical aspects of a Fila and the genetical and instinctive aspects of a Fila. In other words, if you get a fila with a muzzle half the size its supposed to be, you are surely getting half a Fila with half something else. Although their is a similarity in between a pure Fila and a mixed Fila, their is always features in the head and instinct that will denounce the true origin.
By putting close attention to the head of a Fila and following the official CAFIB standard of the Fila Brasileiro it is very easy to detect the many distinctions in between a full blood Fila and a mixed bred Fila.
I thank the breeders whom directly and indirectly have taught me many things about the Filas and have  permited the use of these pictures. Especialy from the following Kennels.
